Digital assets, personal data, online accounts, cryptocurrencies, social media and cloud storage: death now raises issues that go far beyond traditional inheritance.
The programme addressed, in particular, the distinction between digital assets and data, the difficulties in accessing accounts after death, the implications of the contractual terms and conditions of foreign platforms, and the importance of planning ahead for the management of one’s digital estate. Particular attention was paid to the need to set out one’s wishes clearly, to identify the relevant accounts and assets, and to determine, in advance, who will be able to manage them.
This is a topic at the crossroads of inheritance law, data protection and new digital practices.
